Bhagat Singh

Image
Bhagat Singh Bhagat Singh  (September 1907 – 23 March 1931) was a  charismatic  Indian  revolutionary  who participated in the murder of a junior British police officer and an Indian  head constable  in mistaken retaliation for the death of an Indian nationalist.  He also took part in a largely symbolic bombing of the  Central Legislative Assembly  in Delhi and a hunger strike in jail, which—on the back of sympathetic coverage in Indian-owned newspapers—turned him into a household name in Punjab region, and after his execution at age 23 into a martyr and folk hero in Northern India.  Borrowing ideas from  Bolshevism  and  anarchism , he electrified a growing militancy in India in the 1930s, and prompted urgent introspection within the  Indian National Congress 's nonviolent but eventually successful  campaign for India's independence .       In December 1928, Bhagat Singh and an as...

Jallianwala Bagh massacre

Image
Jallianwala Bagh massacre The  Jallianwala Bagh massacre , also known as the  Amritsar massacre , took place on 13 April 1919. A large peaceful crowd had gathered at the  Jallianwala Bagh  in  Amritsar ,  Punjab  to  protest  against the  arrest  of pro-Indian independence leaders  Dr. Saifuddin Kitchlew  and  Dr. Satya Pal.  In response to the public gathering, the  Anglo-Indian   Brigadier   R. E. H. Dyer  surrounded the Bagh with  British Indian army  units. The Jallianwala Bagh could only be exited on one side, as its other three sides were enclosed by buildings. After blocking the exit with his troops, he ordered them to shoot at the crowd, continuing to fire even as the  protestors  tried to flee. The troops kept on firing until their  ammunition  was exhausted.  Estimates of those killed vary between 379 and 1500+ people   an...
