NIMHANS Brain Museum

NIMHANS Brain Museum

trip to NIMHANS’ (National Institute of Mental Health and Science) brain museum opens your eyes to the fascinating workings of the human brain. For over 35 years, NIMHANS’ Neuropathology department has been collecting brain specimens to use them in training their students. You can marvel at all of them at a one-of-a-kind Brain Museum. Under the charge of Professor S.K. Shankar and Dr.Vani, the department has set out to spread the word about neuroscience, to remove the stigma that’s associated with neuropsychiatric illness, and encourage organ donation through this educational tour.

The tour starts off in a tiny classroom adjoining the museum. The staff of the Neuropathy department will explain the functions of the brain and yes, you can also touch and feel the brain on request. It is hardened due to preservation, so don’t expect it to be squishy. Hop to the actual museum – a big, white room that’s lined with shelves that display transparent cases with all kinds of brains in them. There are over 400 of them.

The unique museum of one of the most important organ of our body-The Brain was set up during 1975 at Bengaluru, India by National Institute of Mental Health and Neuro-Sciences (NIMHANS).The museum has different sections related to brain conditions during head injury, cerebrovascular diseases, common neuro-infections involving the brain, developmental disorders of the brain, and brain tumors. The visitors, usually scientists, doctors, various International academic visitors and faculty members from other institutions, used to visit this museum out of curiosity, for teaching purposes and also as a resource center for science students and medical students..There are several mounted specimens of brains in different conditions, which are utilized for demonstration for training students of Neurosurgery and Neurology as well other curious science students and visitors. The mission of the Human Brain Museum is to sow the seeds of Neuroscience in school and college students and other visitors so that they have the general understanding, awareness and knowledge about functioning of extremely important organ of our body. The museum allows some of the exhibit to see closely in multi dimensional way, feel the exhibits by taking these in their hand and allow these to touch as a curiosity. During guided tour of the museum, the visitors are made aware of treatable conditions, curable conditions and the diseases of the brain that cannot be cured.
